Origin: The Fino cultivar, a true lemon tree (Citrus limon), traces its roots to Spain, likely stemming from a seed of the 'Common' lemon tree. Also known as 'Mesero,' 'Blanco,' and 'Primofiori,' Fino boasts several clones, with 'Fino-49' and 'Fino-95' being of particular note.
Distribution: The Fino lemon tree has flourished in various corners of the globe, including Spain, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, and the United States. These regions stand as significant global contributors to the cultivation of authentic lemons.
Morphological Characteristics:
Plant: Robust and vigorous, featuring a large crown with compact vegetation.
Branches and Leaves: Branches typically bear substantial spines; leaves are dark green, large, oval, leathery, and emit a delightful aroma.
Flowers: Complete flowers that cluster together with minimal reflorescence.
Fruits: Medium-sized, averaging around 110 grams; their shapes vary from spherical to oval, featuring an absence of neck in the peduncular region and a small, pointed nipple. The rind is smooth and thin, turning yellow when ripe. Fino lemons are prized for their copious juice, high acidity, and a moderate number of seeds (4 to 6 per fruit).
Fruit Quality and Market: Fino lemons boast outstanding quality, making them ideal for both fresh consumption and the production of juice for the beverage industry.
Production Season: Fruit maturation typically occurs in the mid-season. In Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, harvesting takes place from June to September, adjusting according to regional temperature averages. These fruits can hang on the trees for several months when stored under favorable conditions. Post-harvest, they can remain in storage for over a month, given controlled refrigeration.
Cultivar Limitations: Fino lemons do have some limitations, including high susceptibility to citrus canker, moderate resistance during transportation and storage, and limited tolerance to salinized soils.
Rootstock: Recommended rootstock options include the 'Caipira' orange tree, as well as lemon trees 'Cravo' and 'Volkameriano.' However, the Trifoliata and citrumel tree 'Swingle,' as well as other citrus trees, are incompatible with the Fino lemon from the Sicilian group.
Planting Spacing: Given the substantial size of the Fino lemon trees, it is advisable to space them at 7 meters by 5 meters, resulting in an average density of 285 plants per hectare, excluding the areas occupied by windbreaks. In particularly clayey soils, smaller spacing may be considered.
Plant Management: Fino lemon trees demand generous fertilization due to their substantial nutrient requirements. Regarding nitrogen, preference should be given to ammoniacal or ammonium-forming sources.
Productivity: Fino lemon is celebrated for its high productivity. Depending on growing conditions, annual yields can reach an impressive 50 tons per hectare, making it a valuable cultivar in the world of citrus farming.
